Abstract
Background: The purpose of this study was to assess the degree of cognitive function and related factors in rural area. Especially, we focused on the association between cognitive impairment and health-related factors such as behaviors and dietary habits.

Methods: The sample for this study was selected from Sabuk area of Chuncheon City. 245 individuals completed the survey and the final analysis included 226 subjects (92.2%). The questionnaire included socio-demographic data, MMSE-K for assessing cognitive function, Alameda-7 for evaluation of health-related behaviors and a simple nutritional evaluation.

Results: The mean score of MMSE-K was 25.4¡¾3.6 and significantly lower in female. Also, the scores were much higher in those who were younger, supported by a spouse, in good health with no disease and those having a monthly income of over 500,000 won. After adjusting for age and education level, only high income level showed significantly higher scores on the MMSE-K. There was no statistical correlation with health-related behavior variables (according to Alameda 7). Scores were shown to be positively affected by eating fish after adjusting for age and education level in an analysis of dietary habits.

Conclusions: The proportion of cognitive impairment was associated with age, education and income level. There was a positive correlation with eating fish in cognitive funtion. A detailed clinical study to clarify these relations is required.
